Facts about Samar

Samar is located in the Eastern Visayas part of the Philippines, which is also considered to be the central Philippines.

The third largest by area and seventh most populous island in the country, it is divided into three provinces – Samar, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar.

During the Spanish expedition back in March 16, 1521 the province of Samar was the first ever island in the Philippines that was sighted by the Spaniards led by Ferdinand Magellan.

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer known to be the man leading the 1519 Spanish expedition to the East Indies across the Pacific Ocean.

Samar is the home to Asia’s second largest cave which is the Langon-Gobingob in Calbiga, Samar.

And the world renowned Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge in Basey, Samar.

As of 2020, the province of Samar has a total population of 1,909,537 and about third of the island is protected as natural park, known as the Samar Island Natural Park.

Calicoan Beach

Calicoan Beach in Eastern Samar

Location: Guiuan, Eastern Samar

Calicoan Island or Beach is situated in the southeast part of Samar in the Philippines.

The island is under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Guiuan and can be reached by 3 hour bus ride from Tacloban City.

Calicoan is considered to be the surfing capital of the Eastern Visayas region.

It boasts miles of white sand beach, six lagoons in the middle of the island, dozens of caves at the cliffside, and 10,000 meter deep over the pacific.

The island is truly a surfer’s paradise. Best season for great waves would be typically around October to March.

Pink Beach

Pink Beach in Northern Samar

Location: San Vicente, Northern Samar

Pink Beach is located in Sila Island of San Vicente, Northern Samar in the Philippines.

It is part of the seven islands composing the San Vicente municipality islands.

All the islands are white sand beach, except for Sila Island because of its pinkish sand.

This wonderful travel destination is popularly known as “Pink Beach” to the locals and travelers.

The pinkish color of the sand comes from the natural color of seashells and corals, and over the years it was mixed to the original white sand color of the beach.

Sila Island is surrounded by turquoise sparkling water and can be enjoy with swimming, snorkeling and diving.

San Vicente, Northern Samar can be reached through plane with a direct flight to Catarman and from there you have to take a van service to Calbayog.

From Calbayog you will take a 45 minutes boat ride to Sila Island.

Epifania Beach

Epifania Beach is a tropical paradise located in Marabut, Samar in the Philippines.

Leyte is situated in the Eastern Visayas group of island in the Philippines.

The eight largest island by area, and sixth most populous in the country with a total of more than 2.6 million people as of 2020.

The island of Leyte is divided into two provinces – Northern Leyte and Southern Leyte. With two considered major cities – Tacloban City and Ormoc City.

Leyte is one of the most historic province in the Philippines.

Back in the 16th century, Leyte was known as the site of the largest naval battle in the modern history, which is the Battle of Leyte Gulf during the second world war. And the landing of General Douglas MacArthur at Dulag Beach, Leyte in October 20, 1944.

General Douglas MacArthur was a US Army General for the United States, and the first and only Field Marshal in the history of the Philippine Army.

Province of Leyte is also believed to be the place for the first ever mass held in the Philippines that happened in Limasawa island.

It is the home of the longest bridge in the country which is San Juanico Bridge, and Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte which is a virgin island with pure white sand.

Silago Beach is located in the Municipality of Silago in Southern Leyte, Philippines.

The area of Silago is considered to be mountainous interior with a unique black sand beach.

Silago has been awarded as the cleanest and greenest town in Region VIII or Eastern Visayas.

This amazing place can be reached with only 2 hour and a half drive from Tacloban City.

Red Beach is located in Palo, Leyte just six miles from Tacloban City in the Philippines.

The beach has a historic significance in the province of Leyte because of the landing of General Douglas MacArthur and the Allied Forces on his return to the country.

After his participation in World War II during the Japanese occupation this historic memorial was built.

In honor of his bravery in leading and helping the country in liberating from foreign domination.

Since then the Red Beach has been part of every tourists itinerary in Eastern Visayas.
